Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are privately offered insurance plans that are administered by the Social Security Administration. Companies must be approved by Medicare to sell Advantage plans, therefore they are well regulated. PPO plans can be found from most insurance carriers that sell Medicare Advantage plans.

What Are PPO Plans?

A PPO plan is a type of Medicare Advantage plan offered through Part C of the Medicare program. These plans have network doctors, out-of-network providers, and hospitals. If you choose to seek medical care from providers within the network, you will pay less for the services you receive. If you instead choose to see doctors outside of the network, you will have to pay more for those services.

What Do PPO Plans Include?

PPO plans include all of your basic Part A and Part B health care benefits, so there isn’t much difference between them and other Medicare plans. In most PPO plans, prescription drugs are covered, so you won’t need to find alternative prescription drug coverage. This is important because Medicare Advantage plan members cannot join a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Some PPO plans may also include supplemental benefits, like free meal delivery or transportation to and from hospital visits. To find out what benefits are available with plans in your area, get in touch with an insurance agent.

Do PPO Plans Require Primary Care Physicians?

If you are enrolled in a PPO plan, you do not need to have a primary care physician. Therefore, you won’t need to get a referral to see a specialist. Though, keep in mind that if you choose to see in-network specialists, your costs will be lower than if you see out-of-network specialists.
